While the #DeleteUber hashtag continues to gather steam on social media, Lyft is taking on Donald Trump’s Muslim ban directly — and probably picking up some new customers in the process. The ride-sharing company — and Uber competitor — addressed the political minefield in an email to customers, bearing the title “Defending Our Values.” The joint statement from co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer protests Trump’s controversial executive order in strong terms. “Banning people of a particular faith or creed, race or identity, sexuality or ethnicity from entering the U.S. is antithetical to both Lyft’s and the nation’s core values,” the email reads. “We stand firmly against these actions, and will not be silent on issues that threaten the values of our community.” Read more… More about Ride Sharing, Uber, Lyft, Us, and Social Good via Blogger Lyft pledges $1 million ACLU donation in response to Trump’s #MuslimBan

IMage: Herbert Ponting/Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge/Getty Images In 1910, British explorer Robert Falcon Scott embarked on an ambitious expedition to Antarctica, aiming to explore uncharted wastelands, conduct scientific studies and above all else, become the first person to reach the South Pole. He had competition. Ernest Shackleton had come within 100 miles of the pole the previous year, and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen also had his sights set on reaching it first. The actor flipped a vile social media comment on its head Saturday, using the message of hate to rally support for Syrian refugees to the tune of $50,000. Penn shared a screenshot of what appeared to be an Instagram comment in which someone said “you don’t belong in this country you fucking joke.” He linked to a crowdfunding page entitled, appropriately enough, “Donating to Syrian Refugees in the Name of the Dude Who Said I Don’t Belong in America.” Read more… More about Muslim Travel Ban, Donald Trump, Syrian Refugees, Kal Penn, and Watercooler via Blogger Actor Kal Penn raises thousands for Syrian refugees after vile social media comment Links to President Donald Trump are shaping up to be a liability for Silicon Valley’s golden boys. Case in point: Uber. The hashtag #DeleteUber has been spreading on social media amid protests against Trump’s Muslim travel ban. The ride hailing service was accused of “strike breaking” in New York Saturday, while others condemned remarks made by Uber CEO Travis Kalanick indicating he would work with the president. In a Facebook statement, Kalanick said the “ban will impact many innocent people.” Hundreds travelled to New York’s John F. Kennedy airport Saturday to demonstrate against Trump’s executive order, which prohibits citizens of seven majority Muslim countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days. The company’s cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky wrote on Facebook that Airbnb will provide free housing to refugees and people not in their home city who are denied the ability to board flights. “We have 3M homes, so we can definitely find people a place to stay,” he wrote, asking people to reach out to him via his personal email. An Airbnb spokesperson told Mashable more detail would be shared in the coming days. “We will leverage existing tools, like our disaster response tools, among others,” he added. Trump signed the executive order Friday, which included a 90-day travel ban for citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen, as well as a 120-day suspension of the U.S. refugee program. The move threw lives immediately into chaos, cancelling the travel plans of approved refugees and seeing those with valid U.S. visas turned away at transit stops or removed from planes.
